The Extension Division of the NH/VT District supports newly-formed congregations and assists groups undergoing growth. One means of support is the Chalice Lighter Program. Donations are solicited each year, and the resulting fund provides grants for projects that will contribute to the growth of Unitarian Universalism within the District.

After several years of dwindling attention, the Chalice Lighter Program has again been active for the past few years. In 2001, $3,400 was distributed as follows:

• UU Fellowship of the Northern Slopes - received $1,700 to assist in continuing growth, moving from a lay-led ministry to an ordained ministry.
   
• UU Society of South Strafford VT - received $1,200 to assist in rekindling a congregation dormant since 1980. Funds were used for hymnals and guest ministry.
   
• UU Church of Rutland VT - received $500 to assist growth after a period of decreasing membership. Funds contributed to a full-time ministry.

Requests for Chalice Lighter grants are usually received by early May, and awarded within a month or two, after deliberations by the Chalice Lighter award committee.
