The New Hampshire-Vermont District was organized in 1962, shortly after the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) was formed. In 1993, the District formally joined the Field Services Program of the Association.

We serve as a resource for local congregations and we help to extend Unitarian Universalist influence in the larger community. The purposes of the NH/VT District are:

  • to cultivate cooperative relationships among member societies;

  • to promote the religious life of those societies;

  • to assist member societies to carry on active and effective programs in their respective communities;

  • to cooperate with the UUA for the promotion and fulfillment of its purpose.

To fulfill these purposes, the District maintains an office, publishes a newsletter, has a board of directors, works through departments and organizations, and has trustees of trust funds. Members of local societies are encouraged to contact District personnel regarding any local need. The continuing emphasis of the District is service to local Unitarian Universalist societies.

The District Field Staff are dedicated to fostering the spiritual and institutional health of Unitarian Universalism by serving as leaders, consultants, advocates, and educators in our community of congregations.

The District Executive serves as the UUA's local presence and is the first person to contact about UUA services. The District also employs a Program Consultant, whose focus is primarily Lifespan Education, a local priority for many years. The District Staff work together with ministers and lay leaders in congregations, including consultations on congregational issues such as planning and organizational development, ministerial transitions, leadership training, and conflict management.

The District is governed by a Board of Trustees, which develops District policy, supports local congregations, and encourages the growth, development, and extension of Unitarian Universalist ideals.

The District also elects a member of the UUA Board of Trustees, the policy-making body for the UUA.
